    Dear Member

The Committee met this week to discuss the temporary closing of the club as is now required by law. We will re-open as soon as the Government gives approval.

The enforced closure, and the new rules around social contact, means that it will not be possible to hold an ANZAC Day event of any kind this year. The Committee are asking that you support the State run event in any way that you can, remembering that you will not be able to attend in person.

This is only the second time in the history of ANZAC Day that it has had to be cancelled and although we would all like to do something, this year it is just not possible.

I will let you know what is going on regularly including when we believe that we might be able to reopen the club, in the mean time please keep in contact with each other by phone or email or which ever way you can. So many of our members feel that the club is home and the members are their family.

We will need to keep our mental welfare strong.

If any member requires any assistance what so ever then please call me direct and I am sure that we can point you in the right direction, please don’t sit at home and suffer alone, you do have friends that care about you and are more than willing to help.

I will keep you posted and look forward to a grand reopening very soon into the future.

See you all at the club soon.

The last couple of weeks have been incredible at the club, Pub Trivia with a pint and Parmi on Thursdays with Petrice, has been keeping everyone challenged, and well fed. So if you’re out and about on Thursday night why not drop in and visit your mates.

Fridays lately have been going through the roof with a real ground swell of new people coming to check out our fantastic little club and enjoying Chef Steve's fabulous meals

Last Saturday night was the club's fundraiser for the year, and our quiz night was a great success. There were lots of people in the club with their hands deep in their pockets so thank-you to everyone that supported the event and a very special thank-you to Ann and Paul Glover for organising, Patt for keeping the questions coming and of course the wonderful bar staff, Petrice, Robby and Amy for keeping the drinks coming - everyone got much more creative with their answers as the night progressed.

Night Owls Lawn bowling has started again down at the Semaphore Bowling club on a Thursday night, and we have entered another 2 teams this year.  Everyone is welcome to come along and play or watch, teams will rotate so even if you have never played before you will be welcome to give it a go.

The committee have a few new exciting items coming up to raise a little more interest around the club, so watch this space, or better yet call in to the club to keep up with what is happening.

    Upcoming events

Next Monday (28th October) is the Bunnings BBQ, if you can give 1 hour or so to cook or sell a sausage it would be very much appreciated, these events make some much needed cash for the club and they are always a great laugh on the day.  Put your name down on the sign up sheet at the bar, or reply to this email to let us know your preferred times.

November 2nd is the Annual Armistice Dinner if you haven’t bought a ticket yet be quick it should be a good night.  The Australian Army Band will be providing music, and we are fortunate to have Group Captain Greg Weller as our speaker.  Greg is Director, Community Engagement at RAAF Edinburgh and Deputy Chair of the Epic Flight Centenary 2019 Committee. He’s also done a lot of research work on Sir Ross Smith in recent years, and as the dinner this year will be a tribute to Sir Ross Smith, and the unveiling of club memorabilia in his honor this should be a very informative and interesting discussion.

Tickets are $55 for a 3 course meal including pre-dinner drink and are available from the bar.

Our quarterly General Meeting will be on Saturday 16 November and will also be our member's Xmas party as per normal. This year we will precede the GM with a meeting for volunteers to express our appreciation for their assistance during the year and also provide some updated training to ensure that our club remains compliant with the regulations.  Volunteer training will start at 11.00am followed by lunch at 12.00pm, Meeting at 1.00pm and Xmas party at 2.00pm.

A full day where we hope to catch up with as many of you as possible. More details in coming blogs, but mark the date in your diary so you don't miss out.

And of course 2020 is coming up fast, so we have opened bookings for our New Years Eve celebrations.  Dinner will be available from 6.00pm and Yesterday's Heroes will provide the music to help us party into the new year.  Get in early for tickets as these will be strictly limited.

See you all at the club soon

    Dear Member

I hope you have been keeping warm and dry over the past couple of weeks, I know we need the rain and it is winter but it has been very cold.

I think it’s about time that we should all be chasing David and Candy Kerr, and Willy and Stretch as they follow the sun around northern Australia over winter, but if have to brave the cold, you may as well do it at the club.

Quiz night is starting to become very popular with Steve in the Gallipoli Grill cooking around 50 meals each Thursday night so I can highly recommend you come down and try a beef or chicken parmigiana with beer (or wine) for $13 and have a go at the trivia - the topics are wide and varied so you never know when your specialist subject will come up - drink tickets are on offer for the winners.

A full menu is also available from 6.00pm - 8.00pnm on Friday night, and the $10 roast on Sunday is also proving very popular - with live music from Gordon this Sunday from 1.00pm, Blue Grass Jam from 2.00pm next week, and Gordon back again the following week why not take some time out on Sunday to relax with us for a few hours.

Saturday night this week will have the showdown live on the big screen: free bar snacks and cheap drinks from siren to siren, should be a great evening - warm and dry, what more could you ask for?

On Saturday the 13th we will be having a fun night at the club to raise some much needed funds. There is live music for McGuired for Sound, and free entry. The theme for the night is to come dressed as something that starts with R S or L (op shop costumes preferred with a $10 limit on costume spend).  Bar manager extraordinaire Petrice has spent a lot of time organising the event so let’s show our support.  There will be prizes for best costume as well as a few surprises during the night.

Next month is the Andy Bird Cup on Saturday 17th so if you are an 8 ball player look out for details and the sign up sheet at the club.

And if you don't have commitments during the day, the next Bunnings BBQ will be on 24 July - this is a great opportunity to raise funds for the club and usually a bit of fun as well.  You don't have to commit all day, an hour or 2 would be much appreciated if you are free.  Talk to Wendy on Friday night or email functions@semaphoreportadelaidersl.com.au if you can help.

Well the AGM has been and gone again for another year, so I thought I would write a short note just to say thank you for having me as the President of this great club for the last year and I look very much forward to being your President for another year.

The committee you have representing you this year is,

    • President - Colin Johns
    • Vice President – Derek Meadows
    • Vice President  – Shane Edmonds
    • Treasurer – Julie Barry
    • Secretary - position not yet filled
    • Committee Member – Paul Glover
    • Committee Member – Graham (Chook) Wilson
    • Committee Member – Steve Dennison-Smith
    • Function Co-ordinator – Wendy Tran

Daryl Mundy has put his name forward to join the committee, so this will be done at the next committee meeting, a very welcome addition.

We are still looking for a Secretary or even an assistant Treasurer, so if you would like to be steering this great sub branch forward please make yourself known.

By popular vote the kitchen will be named the Gallipoli Grill.  Flyers will be going out shortly to promote Steve's Parmi & Pint, and Sunday Roasts so please recommend us to your friends and neighbours.

I would also like to thank the Service Members of the club for supporting my nomination for the top job of State President, this will be decided in early July.

    Coming events :

    • Bunnings BBQ Tuesday 22nd May and 24 July - volunteers always needed to help out
    • Bar Quiz + Parmi and Pints every Thursday evening - $13
    • Winter Warmer: 2nd June.  Drink specials, $10 Roast lunch, BlueGrass Jam and lots of raffles and prizes

Hope to see you all at the club soon

    Hello All,

Just a quick note this week to let you know a little about what has been happening in your club and a small amount of what we are doing in the future.

ANZAC Day has now passed once again, as you know none of the event can be organised or run by one or 2 people on their own. This year was no exception.  I must thank the huge number of volunteers this year, I think maybe more people volunteered this year than any other. It is impossible to thank every one with out missing some ones name so I will simply say a huge heart felt thanks to all that helped.

This week the $300 cash draw was won by Julie Meadows, a very worthy winner and congratulations.

Over the next few weeks you will see some new club memorabilia being purchased by the club, so look out for that and support where you can.  We are also now selling Pirate Life beer, so if you want to try something different and support a local brewery come and have a can with us.

One of our goals this year is to open for meals on more days.  Petrice is running a pub Trivia quiz on Thursdays, and when we get enough people coming into the club Steve will start to open the kitchen.  Until then we are putting on bar snacks for those who play.  Over the winter we would also like to have meals on a Sunday, so watch your emails, facebook and letter boxes for updates.

We have a Bunnings BBQ (Woodvillle) coming in May so we will be looking again for support to run that.  If you have a couple of hours please put your name down as this will make it easier on the ones that are having to spend all day there.

On Sunday the 19th May we will be holding our AGM at 12.00 noon with a free lunch and a couple of drinks per member. This will also be the time that all positions on the committee will be vacated and a new committee elected.

If you would like to be involved with the running of the club and be part of the steering committee to take the club forward into the future then this is the time.

The club needs good leadership and governance to remain on top of the game and keep progressing into the future for all members.

Nomination forms are in the club, if there is room on the committee after the nominations are open then nominations can be taken from the floor, so save disappointment and nominate early.

Any questions if any that you may have prior to the AGM can also be directed to Phil Stewart ( stretch ) as he is the nominated returning officer this year and will take the nominations for the new committee.

I would like to thank the current committee for all their dedication and many  hours of work they have volunteered over the last year, and what a year it has been.

Hope to see you all in the club soon

    Dear Members,

Just a quick note to let you all know what is happening around the club lately.

The Veterans Motorsport Club are hosting a fund raiser with Angry Anderson on Tuesday 9th @ 6.00pm to raise awareness of the issues around mental illness that affect our Veterans, as well as many others in the wider community.  There are still tickets left so if you want to come along there will be tickets at the door ($22) plus Steve will be doing meals from 6.00pm.

The big one is ANZAC Day coming up very soon, this year it will be right at the end of the Easter break and as a lot of people will be going away we are finding it a little bit tought getting volunteers on the day. If you can spare a couple of hours please let us know and we would appreciate your help.

The next is volunteers for the bar, we have an urgent need for more volunteer bar staff, if you think you would like to give an hour or 2 in the evenings or afternoons on weekends it would be most appreciated, the more we have the easier it is on the rest.

On Friday night the $700 was won by Brian, well done mate. Brian is a great supporter of the club and a deserving winner.  The draw is back to $100 this week.  Although the club will be closed on Good Friday but the Committee has decided to jackpot the cash draw.

Our Friday meat tray raffle has also been given a bit of a boost.  We have added a second prize of a meal voucher for 2 of Steve's great meals, and 3rd prize of a bottle of wine or 6 pack of beer of your choice so certainly worth the $2 ticket.

Your committee is now trying to work on Thursday nights and bring them up to being as popular as Fridays, at the moment we are running Pub Trivia with questions by Petrice with free bar snacks.  If think you could answer a couple of questions and win a free drink or 2, eat some free pizza and hang out with your mates for an hour on Thursday nights this is the place to be.  Once we get to the stage of having enough people around Steve will open the kitchen on Thursdays with some great specials on meals, we will keep you updated about when that will start.

If I don’t see you before Easter have a great break and hope to see you in the club very soon

    Hi Members and Friends,

Just a short note this week to let you know a little of what has been happening in your club and a bit about what is happening soon.

Firstly what a week or so it has been, the jackpot has climbed to $500 this Friday night, well worth winning or at the very least having a meal with your friends while you wait for your name to be drawn.

Last Friday night we had a very special guest to wow the crowd.  Paul Glover had found Herb Armstrong, the grandson of the late Louie Armstrong at the fringe festival and asked him along to the club for a visit and a few tunes. I might say a very popular hit with the crowd.

The entertainment books are available on line now, you can follow the link to buy this great book of discounts and the club will profit from the sale. We will also have some hard copies in the office should you want to buy a hard copy.

    https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/167y920

ANZAC Day is closing in fast and we still need more volunteers, so if you have a couple of hours you can donate please let us know.

Thursday night we have the Jazz Kings back and the club will be offering free bar snacks, come along for a listen.

On the 28thof March we will be starting Bar Trivia, hosted by Petrice with free bar snacks, should be a lot of fun.

The RSL 1 lawn bowls team have made the grand final this Thursday night, so good luck team.

RSL Snooker team went down in the semi finals this week so their season is over but well done team you did us proud again.

Footy tipping starts this week so get your name down and pay your $20 early this week to be in the fun.

Coming soon, Angry Anderson will be at the club for a fundraiser, will let you know all the details as they happen, this should be a good night.

Hope to see you in the club soon,
    Colin Johns

    Hi Members and Friends,

It has been a long time now since I last wrote a blog to let you all know what is and has been happening, and what will be happening  around our fantastic club.

As you would be aware the renovations are all finished now and the club is back to functioning as normal, a huge thanks to Derek Meadows who worked countless hours co-ordinating the trades people to complete the job in a timely manner.

We are currently only having meals on Friday nights but the committee is working on events for Thursday nights that would include meals also, if you have any suggestions please feel free to talk to a committee member and give us your ideas.  The committee will give due consideration to all suggestions.

This Friday night the 1st of March we have a special guest coming to the club to give a 5 minute talk about RSL Care.  As we know caring for the elderly and sick is a huge responsibility for the RSL and Nathan Kling is the CEO of RSLSA our own organisation that is doing a fantastic job of looking after our veterans.

If you can please come in and listen to what he has to say and show your support for this worthy cause it would be greatly appreciated.

Next Friday the 8th of March the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor, Claire Boan and the 2 Semaphore councillors, Helen Wright and David Wilkins will be joining us for a drink, I hope as many of you that are able will come along and meet the Mayor and Semaphore Ward Councillors.

ANZAC Day is coming fast now and we need a lot of volunteers for the day, there will be a sheet placed on the notice board at the Club, please add your name if you are able to give a little help. ANZAC Day is of course the biggest day on the club calendar, and is also our biggest fundraiser of the year.

Footy tipping, the club will be running a footy tipping competition again this year please get your name in soon, $20 entry and you could win an absolute fortune or about $400 depending how many people we get. We will be having as many as possible twilight siren to siren and all the showdown football matches on the big screen, with cheaper drinks, and free bar snacks on Saturday nights.

For those that haven’t been in for a while the huge screen (the biggest in the area) is fantastic for watching footy.

The lawn bowling on Thursday nights is going well, the season is almost finished with RSL 1 on top of the ladder.

The pool and snooker comps are well under way, so as you can see there is plenty happening, so why not come down, visit your mates and join in, we would love to see you.

My apologies for not writing more often but will make more of an effort in the future.

    President

    Hi Members and Friends

Sorry it has been a while since you have heard from me, we all know what it’s like to be busy.

The club has been rocking over the last few weeks with Open MIC Night a raging success to Friday nights being well attended.
The kitchen is doing some fantastic meals with members and visitors enjoying some great priced meals.

Should Joy Morrison have been in the room Friday night she would have been $500 richer. But the good news is this week the cash will be worth a massive $600.

ANZAC Day is getting closer now and it is the clubs major ceremony of the year, this is also the day we need as many volunteers as we can get. If you can give a little time to the club please put our name down at the bar. Any help is always appreciated.

Whilst we are on the subject I would also like to extend the clubs greatest thank you for the support given to us from our local members of Government, Mark Butler, Susan Close, and the Port Adelaide Enfield Council without their help we could not put on this very important event.

This Friday night we have the Jazz Kings in to play, last time they were in the club they were fantastic come along and have a party.

Don’t forget it is compulsory to vote this weekend,

See you all at the club soon

    Hi Members and Friends,

Another busy week at the club ending today in our General Meeting. This week has been a busy one for the committee getting the reports in order for today. The meeting was well attended with a positive theme from all who attended.

Friday night was club night as usual with quite a few meals sold by chef Steve. I must say the meals are of a very high standard and if you haven’t been in for a while to try Steve’s cooking you should come in for a taste.

For the second week in a row Steve Johns has had his name drawn out of the cash draw barrel only to not be there for either draw.  This will make this weeks draw $300.

Now is also the time to be thinking if you are able to donate some time on ANZAC Day.
This is the clubs biggest day of the year and cannot be a great success without your support.

Don’t forget that memberships are now due, you can renew online on the club website or why not drop in and say hi while you renew we would love to see you.

I hope to see you all at the club soon

    Colin Johns

    President
